Measured twice, then tuned once

I'm Killa Chirinos, an acoustics consultant. I tune studios, chapels, lecture halls and meeting rooms.

A corner of a recording studio's live room: a wall of pale wooden slat diffusers, a grey fabric bass trap in the corner, a grey panel under the ceiling, an oak floor with a wooden stool and a microphone on a stand
Measured empty, from nine points

A live room in Barranco

Drums rang on after each hit, and every take sounded like the room. I put wood diffusers on the back wall and bass traps in two corners. Reverberation went from 0.9 to 0.4 seconds, measured empty.

Rows of pale wooden pews in a small white chapel, seen from the front, with tall narrow windows and a back wall of vertical wooden slats
Measured from fourteen points

A chapel for 200 in Pueblo Libre

Spoken words blurred by the third pew, though the choir sounded fine. I hid absorbing panels behind wooden slats and moved the loudspeakers. Reverberation went from 3.2 to 1.9 seconds; the choir kept its warmth.

An empty meeting room seen from the end of a long pale oak table, grey chairs on both sides, grey felt panels hanging under the ceiling, a glass wall and a window onto a grey sky
Measured from every chair, door shut

A meeting room for twelve in San Isidro

Voices echoed on video calls, and the corridor came through the glass. I hung felt panels, sealed the door and added a second pane of glass. Reverberation went from 1.1 to 0.5 seconds; the corridor is 12 dB quieter.

How I measure

I come when the room is empty. A small loudspeaker plays test sweeps from where people speak or play, and a microphone listens from ten to fifteen places where they sit. From those recordings I read how long sound lingers, where it rings and how much comes in from outside. The report puts each number next to what I would change, and after the work I measure again.

A sample report

Twelve pages from a chapel: the measurements, the plan and the numbers after the work, with names and addresses left out.

Killa Chirinos

Acoustics consultant, Taller Resonante

I started in recording studios and have tuned rooms in Lima for twelve years. I measure before I suggest anything, and again when the work is done.

Fees

I quote after one visit to the room. The quote comes in writing, in soles, before any work starts.

Before you write

Can we talk online before you visit?

Yes. Send me a few photos and a floor plan, and we can talk on a video call before I come.

How long does it take?

Measuring takes half a day in most rooms. The report follows within two weeks, and I measure again once the work is done.

Should I call you before or after a renovation?

Before, if you can: a change on paper costs less than a change on the wall. I also work on rooms that are already finished.

Tell me about your room

What it is for, how many people use it and what bothers you about the sound.
