Eight Tuesdays, one short story
Each spring our quarterly opens its editorial room to twelve writers. Apply in winter with one story.
Week by week
- 1First pages and what they promise
- 2Who tells the story, and why
- 3Scenes, and what to leave out
- 4Dialogue that does two jobs
- 5The middle, where things change
- 6Endings, and how to find yours
- 7Revising: cutting a fifth
- 8Reading the finished story aloud

How the course works
Twelve writers, our editor and a guest writer meet on Tuesday evenings in the room where we edit each issue. Every week brings a short reading and new pages of your own, and on the eighth Tuesday you read your finished story aloud. Our editors read every finished story for the summer issue.
Nika Rebolj
Editor of Odstavek
I have edited our fiction pages for nine years. I read every application myself, and I look for a voice before polish.
Jure Lesjak
Guest writer
I write short stories and teach the weeks on dialogue and endings. Bring the story you have not dared to finish.

Before you apply
Can I apply if I have never been published?
Yes. We choose the twelve by the story you send, not by where you have published.
Which language do I write in?
Slovenian or English. We talk in English around the table, and both teachers read both languages.
How much time do the eight weeks take?
One evening a week at the table, from six to nine, and about five hours of writing at home. The weeks run without a break, so keep two months clear.
Questions before you apply? Write to us; we answer within a week.
