Learn danzón at eleven. Dance it by noon.
Every Sunday in a courtyard in San Rafael, Mexico City: a 45-minute class for beginners, then the floor is open to everyone until 14:30. Come alone or as a pair; we lend the fans.
Every Sunday
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 11:00 | Beginners' class, 45 minutes, twelve pairs at most. Come alone and we pair you up. |
| 12:00 | Open social until 14:30. Free, and everyone is welcome on the floor. |
| Last Sunday | A live danzón band plays the social from 12:30. |
What to bring
Nothing to buy, and nothing special to wear.
Smooth soles that slide a little; rubber trainers grip the floor.
Most people come alone, and we pair everyone up in the class.
The pauses in danzón are made for fanning. We lend twenty.
Sundays are warm in the courtyard. Bring a bottle; we refill it.
Prices
In Mexican pesos. Pay at the gate, in cash or by card.
One Sunday
The beginners' class and the social after it.
Four Sundays
Four classes to use within two months.
The social only
For anyone who already dances, 12:00 to 14:30.
Danzón is slow on purpose. In the pauses you fan yourself, look up and wait for the music to call you back.
Questions
What people ask before their first Sunday.
I have never danced. Can I come?
Yes. The class starts from the first step, and most people in it are new.
Do I need a partner?
No. Come alone and we pair you up; partners change during the class.
What if it rains?
We dance under the arcade around the courtyard. The floor is smaller, so the class takes ten pairs.
How do I cancel?
Send a message by Saturday evening, and we give your place to the next person.
Can children come?
Anyone from twelve can join the class; under-sixteens come with an adult.
Tell us your name and how many places. We answer by Saturday noon.
